What are the benefits of learning to sew?
Connecting the hands, heart, and head, learning to sew engages children cognitively, emotionally, and physically. Fine motor skills and bilateral coordination build brain synapses and enhance neurological readiness for academic subjects like reading and math. Rhythmic, repetitive crafting builds sustained attention, impulse control, patience, and perseverance through troubleshooting mistakes. By creating items that are both beautiful and functional, a child fosters their independence while also enabling them to express their creativity--boosting their confidence and self-esteem.
It is important that the materials we use are always of the highest quality because they nourish a child's sensory development, emotional connection to nature, and respect for craftmanship. Examples of some of our materials are 100% cotton, linen, wool felt, and natural plant dyes.
Little Stitches
(5 & 6)
In Little Stiches
we will learn:
Foundations in hand sewing, embroidery, quilting, natural dyeing, and an introduction to machine sewing.
Project examples: hand sewn felt item, hand embroidered felt candle mats, napkins, quilted placemat
Bobbin Buddies
(7-12)
In Bobbin Buddies
we will learn:
Hand sewing, embroidery, simple quilting, natural dyeing, basic printmaking, and sewing machine foundations.
Project examples: hand sewn felt items, embroidered candle mats and bookmarks, embroidered sewing roll, cross stitched needle case and pin cushions, embroidered sun-hat.
Stitch Squad
(7-12)
In Stich Squad
we will learn:
Cross-stitch, more advanced embroidery, appliqué, quilting, natural dyeing, printmaking, and machine sewing & dynamics.
Project examples: bookmarks, embroidered sewing roll, cross-stitched needle case, block printed and appliquéd items, traditional Waldorf-style doll, clothing items.
